As a teacher, food artist and organic gardener, I firmly believe introducing children to proper eating habits at an early age leads to healthy adults. The secret is to teach children without sounding condescending—or, even worse, boring. Yummy Stories can help parents and teachers - it's a fun-filled reading book for children ages four to eight, encouraging healthy eating habits while keeping them interested and entertained. All the stories are centered on healthy eating, in a subtle and effective way. Children have fun and learn at the same time. Yummy Stories offers a collection of six fun, engaging stories centered on healthy eating. Children will meet a young pea who dreams of being planted by a princess, and Cheekerchuck, a dinosaur whose appetite for vegetables and fruit help him grow into the biggest animal in town. Three squabbling fairies learn how each helps gardens grow healthy food, while a brave little girl teaches a carrot-loving giant a powerful lesson about fairness.

Filled with puns and rhymes, each story ends with a short poem summarizing the story's lesson and suggesting a healthy eating habit. While exploring the book's lush artwork, children find houses made of mushrooms, fences of  carrot sticks, clouds of cauliflower, trees of broccoli, and other playful nods toward nutritious food. This entertaining artwork was made by talented illustrator Anda Cofaru.

Anda loves illustrating children's books because that way she stays connected to her inner child. Also, she believes that creating a better world starts with our children and their education - so her illustrations are filled with light, realistic coloring and an overall positive atmosphere. She is inspired by nature, and loves hiking in the mountains.

Please note that Yummy Stories is not just a storybook with nice pictures. You'll discover soon all the goodies that lay hidden within. Two of the main characters have cleverly snuck in other stories (a very effective exercise of concentration and attention, for children) and this is not the only surprise ...

Kirkus Reviews

In this illustrated children’s book, modern fairy tales encourage children to eat delicious fruits and vegetables.

Talking vegetables, a hungry dinosaur and a cabbage-loving emperor: These and other characters populate the six stories in this collection. In the first, for example, “The Pea and the Princess,” a brave little pea wishes to be sown by a true princess, so he goes in search of one. First a toad tries to eat him, then a rabbit, then a mouse, who grabs him—but is caught by a buzzard, pea and all. The mouse drops him into a castle garden, where he’s found by a true princess and planted. The kingdom’s children get to eat the resulting peas. A food artist, organic gardener and teacher, Alexander playfully encourages good eating habits in her debut story collection. Her stories possess genuine fairy-tale cadence in sentences such as “She put two apples and a goose feather into a bag and went into the forest.” Other successful fairy-tale techniques include building up the story through repetition or deciding to settle a quarrel by asking the first passerby to help. Alexander’s humorous phrasing also appeals: “The giant had only just finished eating and was snoring loudly. Poor squirrels! Unfortunate moles!” The beautifully done illustrations help tell the story; fruits and vegetables are hidden on every page (broccoli trees, an asparagus fence), and finding them is part of the fun. With their well-crafted rhythm and rhyme, the stories are perfect for reading aloud.

A cheerful, fun approach to good food with the authentic flavor of folk tales for kids 4 to 8.

Readers’ Favorite

Yummy Stories: Six Stories to Stimulate Your Mind and Appetite is a children's book written by Lil L. Alexander and illustrated by Anda Cofaru. Each story is a fairy tale or fable. The Pea and the Princess may remind some readers of Jack and the Beanstalk as well as the more obvious fairy tale. Cheekerchuck is the story of an old woman who finds a giant egg in her garden. The Three Garden Fairies is the story of a man and his dog who find a bridge to an enchanted wood where fairies are quarreling about who should be crowned queen. The Strawberry That Liked to Brag is an interactive story whose ending depends on what the reader decides.

Lil L. Alexander's children's book, Yummy Stories, is filled with stories about vegetables and fruits. Sounds pretty tame, right? Wrong! Each of these very yummy stories is a perfect little gem of a fractured fairy tale. They're clever and witty and designed to make you smile with delight as you read -- and, unless you're made of stone, smile you will. Alexander's rhymes are elegant and earthy all at once, and they're never forced or obvious. These stories beg to be read aloud, and I had to restrain myself from doing just that as I read. Anda Cofaru's illustrations are superb! Each page is a giant watercolor filled with lush green landscapes where giant broccoli stalk trees seem very much in place. I especially loved the asparagus-spear fence in the strawberry tale.

Yummy Stories is a yummy book indeed, and it is most highly recommended. I love this book!

Yummy Stories: six stories to stimulate your mind and appetite

Goodreads

A singing pea, a hungry dinosaur, vain fairies and gluttonous giant....and many more vibrant characters are to be found in Lil Alexander's children's book, Yummy Stories.

Yummy stories is a collection of children's fairy tales. Each story tells it's own tale of entertaining characters who find themselves thrown into a magical adventure. It not only tells wonderful stories, but each express important messages about healthy eating habits.

Each story contains original and colorful caricatures who are engaging and fun. They possess the perfect personalities to draw in any young reader.

I greatly enjoyed the author's writing style and it is on par with traditional fairy tale story telling. There is rhyming and line repetition, but is used when appropriate and is not over done. Each story used variations of these styles, making each tale separate from the other.

Wonderful illustrations are as necessary to a children's book as the actual story. I adored Anda Cofaru's pictures. They are large and cover the entire page, drawing in the reader. The colors used are vibrant and rich, bringing to life L'il Alexander's equally vibrant and rich tale.

I highly recommend this children's book of adventure and food for thought.
